Old gold remade

Modernising heirlooms, melting down old gold and making new pieces at the bench

Unhallmarked heirlooms, rings nobody wears or broken chains are worth far more, emotionally and materially, as a hand-made one-off piece than when sold for their metal alone. In our master workshop at Singerstraße 5 we test your old gold, melt it down on site and make it into jewellery to measure for everyday wear, in 18 carat (750) gold or platinum.

Step by step

How your jewellery is remade

  1. Assessment & fineness

Come in without an appointment with your old gold: broken chains, bent rings, single earrings or dental gold. We sort the pieces by fineness (14k / 18k) and weigh them on calibrated precision scales right in front of you.

    About 10–15 minutes Free
  2. Removing stones & checking their condition

We carefully remove existing diamonds, sapphires or emeralds at the bench. Under the microscope we check the stones for inclusions, damaged facets and stress cracks before they are reset.

    Quality checked
  3. Design concept & model

We discuss the new piece you want (for example a modern solitaire ring, a diamond pendant or seamless wedding rings). We define dimensions, setting and profile so that the jewellery stands up to everyday wear.

    Personal consultation
  4. Transparent quotation

You receive a calculation you can follow: the assessed material value of your old gold is deducted directly from the cost of the work at our daily rate. Any surplus metal we pay out in cash straight away or credit to you.

    Full cost control
  5. Made at the Viennese bench

The old gold is alloyed, melted, forged by hand and built up again with your stones. Your gold and your gemstones never leave our premises in the 1st district.

Details of how your metal is used

Precious metals we work

Yellow, white and rose gold of any alloy (14k / 18k / fine gold bars), dental gold (professionally cleaned) and 950 platinum.

Keeping historic engravings & elements

Engravings from your parents’ or grandparents’ old wedding rings can be cut out on request and worked seamlessly into the new ring as an inner band.

How the price is calculated

Final price = craftsmanship − value of your old gold + additional material (if needed).

Frequently asked

Old gold remade

Is remaking old gold worth more than selling it?

In most cases, yes. When you sell, you receive only the melt price. If you have the metal made into a new ring or pendant, you save buying new precious metal altogether (which carries high mark-ups in the trade) and pay only for the working time.

How many grams of gold does a solid ring need?

A narrow ladies’ ring usually needs about 4 to 6 grams of 585 or 750 gold. A wider band or a men’s ring needs about 7 to 12 grams. If you have brought more, the remaining gold is fully credited or paid out.

Can gemstones be damaged when they are removed?

We check every stone you bring under the microscope beforehand. Many stones that have been worn – emeralds and older diamonds in particular – have invisible hairline cracks or internal stresses from years of use.

We open settings with the greatest care. If a stone already shows damage or an incalculable risk of breaking, we tell you plainly before any work begins. Under a contract for work we cannot accept liability for hidden damage, internal stress cracks or brittle inclusions in older stones – the decision to reset is always made together, after the first examination under the microscope.

Does my family gold leave your workshop?

No. Many jewellers act purely as middlemen and post gold to large foundries. At Mikiryan, melting, alloying, rolling and setting happen only at the bench in Singerstraße 5.
