Jewellery repair & restoration in 1010 Vienna

Master goldsmith’s workshop since 1993 – repairs, ring sizing & rebuilt settings on site

From a broken chain link to the full restoration of historic heirlooms: in our own master workshop at Singerstraße 5 we examine and repair jewellery in 14k (585) and 18k (750) gold and 950 platinum. We assess damage openly under the loupe, give you a binding fixed price before any work begins and carry out repairs promptly in-house – with no months of waiting and nothing sent away to outside service providers.

What we do at the bench

Ring resizing (enlarging & reducing)

  • Precise shank adjustment: Seamless compressing, stretching or inserting matching original material in 14k and 18k gold and 950 platinum.
  • Protecting engravings & stones: Laser welding and shielding of delicate gemstones from heat.
  • Eternity & antique rings: Expert assessment of whether, and how far, set shanks can be adjusted without losing stones.

Strengthening settings & rebuilding claws

  • Securing stones: Worn, broken or thinly rubbed claws are built up with fresh precious metal by laser before stones are lost.
  • Rub-over & channel settings: Rebuilding torn metal edges on hard-worn solitaire and tension rings.
  • Loose stones: Re-setting, adjusting and checking security under the microscope.

Chains, bracelets & new clasps

  • Soldering: Broken links in curb, anchor, Venetian or rope chains are closed firmly and polished.
  • Safety mechanisms: Replacing faulty lobster clasps, repairing box clasps and fitting side safety figure-eights against accidental opening.
  • Bails & jump rings: Worn-through pendant bails and jump rings are reinforced with solid gold wire.

Replacing missing gemstones & diamonds

  • Exact stone matching: Colour, cut and clarity matched directly to the remaining stones (diamonds, brilliants, Ceylon sapphires, Colombian emeralds, rubies).
  • Proper setting: No glue – set by hand in metal.
  • Checking for cracks: If you bring damaged stones, we first check the risk of breakage under the microscope.

Restringing & knotting pearl necklaces

  • Traditional hand knotting: Tear-resistant natural silk with a securing knot between every cultured pearl – it stops pearls rubbing against each other and losing them if the thread breaks.
  • Cleaning & new clasps: Gentle cleaning of the pearls and fitting of new ball or bayonet clasps.

Restoration, polishing & rhodium plating

  • Deep cleaning: Removal of deposits by ultrasound and steam.
  • Removing scratches: Gentle removal of signs of wear, satin finishing or high polish.
  • Electroplating: Professional re-rhodium plating of white gold jewellery for a brilliant white.
Step by step

The transparent workshop process

  1. Bring in your piece

Come to Singerstraße 5 during opening hours without an appointment. Bring broken-off parts, remnants or stones that have fallen out – we check on the spot what can be saved.

    No appointment needed
  2. Damage analysis under the loupe

We assess the damage at the counter together with you. Under magnification we show you where metal is fatigued, which claws are loose or whether there are hidden hairline cracks.

    approx. 5–10 min Free
  3. Fixed price & value check

You receive a fixed price before work begins. If a repair is technically unsafe or would cost more than the piece is worth, we advise against it openly and look at melting it down into a new design instead.

    Binding & fair
  4. Masterly repair on site

Soldering, forging, setting and straightening happen at our bench in-house. Your jewellery stays here and is finished within a few working days.

    Craftsmanship from Vienna
  5. Collect it as good as new

Every repaired piece is cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, freshly polished and handed back in a case – at no extra charge.

Frequently asked

Repairs

What do the first assessment and the quotation cost?

The assessment at our counter is completely free and without obligation. We examine the damage, determine alloy and feasibility and give you the fixed price before you place the order.

How long does a typical ring resizing take in 1010 Vienna?

Because our workshop is right in the shop, resizing gold and platinum rings usually takes 2 to 4 working days. Simple reductions or enlargements of plain wedding rings can be done express by arrangement.

Is it worth repairing an old ring that has worn thin?

We check that honestly at the first conversation: if the shank is worn paper-thin all round or the settings are porous, repair costs often outweigh the benefit. In such cases we recommend melting down the old gold and rebuilding the ring solidly, reusing the gemstones.

Do you also repair branded jewellery or pieces not bought from you?

Yes, most of our repair work involves jewellery, heirlooms and watch bracelets from other makers or private collections, whatever their age or origin.

Can you replace missing diamonds or coloured stones with an exact match?

Yes. We don’t set standard stones and hope for the best; we choose replacement diamonds or coloured gemstones by exact diameter, colour and clarity to match the remaining original stones.

Can gemstones break when they are re-set or removed?

We examine stones under the microscope beforehand for existing hairline cracks and internal stress. With brittle stones (e.g. old emeralds) we tell you in advance about the risks inherent in the material. No liability can be accepted for hidden internal damage to older stones; we agree the approach bindingly with you before work begins.
